Long term future of Morwellham Quay

Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council agreed to work in partnership to secure the long term future of Morwellham Quay.

Back in July last year Cornish and West Devon Mining Landscape was recognised by UNESCO as a cultural World Heritage Site (WHS) alongside the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal.

The Tamar Valley and Tavistock are the geographical gateway to the rest of the mining heritage sites and at the centre of the Tamar Valley lays its principal visitor attraction and open air heritage museum at Morwellham Quay.

In making their decision to provide important investment in the future of Morwellham, the local authorities are working closely with the Morwellham and Tamar Valley Trust and the Tamar Valley of Outstanding Natural Beauty to provide a new vision and structure for Morwellham and to secure its future conservation as a site for education, enjoyment and future generations.

We note with concern and disappointment that the Conservative Group at Devon County Council consider that they are unable to give their support to this exciting initiative which will help to rejuvenate the economy of this part of West Devon providing new jobs, new businesses and supporting tourism.

However, we are glad that our Devon County Council Liberal Democrat colleagues have ensured that support is forthcoming as they recognise the importance of investing in Devon.
