Tavistock flies the flag for Devon

The Devon flag now flies proudly above Tavistock

Tavistock Town Council is amongst a number of local councils that have requested their own flag from Devon County Council.

The concept of the Devon Flag started on BBC's website and the design by Ryan Sealey was voted for in an online poll.

Devon County Council has since lent its enthusiastic support to the flag. The distinctive green, white and black flag is often flown at County Hall. It has become a common sight across Devon and further afield at sporting events and at the Last Night of the Proms.

Devon County Council has offered a limited number of flags to local Councils so they can follow suit.

Devon Flag is presented to TavistockThe flag emphasises the county's history, especially its Celtic roots. The green symbolises the fields of Devon, white for the sea and our china clay industries and the black edge of the cross symbolises the granite mica of the moors.

I am pleased that the flag will now be visible in Tavistock and that the Town Council is joining us in this celebration of our County. Enthusiasm for the Devon flag has gone from strength to strength, symbolising the pride that people have in our historic county and the surrounding area. It is an instantly recognisable symbol for Devon.

Much of what is emphasised within the Devon flag is shared with the local environment and history of Tavistock. It will truly recognise the important role that our beautiful market town plays within the County of Devon.
