Battery Lane to Light Up for Pedestrians
Work
on a £24,000 Devon County Council initiative to improve a pedestrian route in
Tavistock is due to start next week. (Monday 18 February)
The County Council has agreed with residents in Battery Lane that the route will be dedicated as public highway, and it will now start on a scheme to improve the surface and lighting along this long established pedestrian access between the Crelake area of Tavistock and the town centre and schools.
The work, which is being funded from the Devon County Council Local Transport Programme for the West Devon Area, has been designed in response to community demand.
The County Council is committed to improving walking and cycling routes to make Devon even greener. This new pedestrian route will hopefully encourage more people to walk in the town to do their bit to reduce their carbon footprint. By providing better lighting, the scheme as a whole will also meet people’s concerns by helping to improve safety and security in this area.
Councillor Roy Connelly, Devon County Councillor for Tavistock, said:
“This scheme is warmly welcomed as it has been on the Tavistock community’s wish list for some time. I am pleased that we have been able to respond to the needs of the community and that we can provide an improved and safer pedestrian route to the town centre. Hopefully it will encourage more people to walk and lead to a further reduction in car use.”
Work is expected to take between two and three weeks.
